Exploring the Perceptions and Experiences of College Students with Disabilities Regarding Support for Higher Education for the Disabled

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to examine the current status of policies to support higher education for the disabled and to propose the support required by students in preparation for the current status of application by analyzing college life experiences of disabled students with disabilities. To this end, literature studies on policies and current status of higher education support for the disabled and focus group interview on college life experiences were conducted for disabled students attending universities. As a result of the study, the policy to support higher education for the disabled provided convenient support through the Disabled Student Support Center in universities based on the Special Education Act for the Disabled and the Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination and Relief of Rights. The perceptions and experiences of disabled students on these support could be categorized into five topics: disability student support center, interaction with faculty, accommodation support, university resources, and suggestions to improve the atmosphere related to disability. In addition, the need for practical research to improve the atmosphere within the university, the response of faculty members, and student support in relation to the support of students with disabilities in college was proposed.
